Cleaning Your Floors and Surfaces

Keeping your floors clean not only makes them look their best, but will significantly improve their lifespan, as it removes dirt and grit that can damage the surface as it's walked on. Be sure to read the specific care and maintenance information for your flooring type that is provided by First Street Flooring.

Hardwood flooring

Hardwood

Vacuum without the beater bar (suction only) and then mop with a damp mop (be sure to ring out most of the moisture).  You can use a specific hardwood cleaner with most prefinished floors (Bona or Shaw Floor cleaner).  Do not use a cleaner with a nuoil finished hardwood.  Do not use any product that has wax in it on a prefinished floor. Protect your floor from scratches with felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  NEVER use a steam cleaner on your hardwood floor.  Rolling chairs void warranties.  Maintain the correct humidity level in your home (see specific instructions for your material).  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your floor - we will send these with your final invoice.

Laminate wood plank flooring

Laminate

Vacuum without the beater bar (suction only).  Use a damp mop to clean. Use only laminate specific cleaning products (Bona, Shaw Floor cleaner). NEVER steam clean a laminate floor.  Do not use any cleaner that has wax in it.  Protect your floor from scratches with felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  Rolling chairs void warranties.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your floor - we will send these with your final invoice. 

Vinyl flooring

Vinyl

Plank or sheet -  vacuum without the beater bar (suction only). Use a damp mop to clean with.  Protect your floor from scratches with felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  Rolling chairs void warranties.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your floor - we will send these with your final invoice.

Marmoleum flooring

Linoleum / Marmoleum

Click or sheet.  Vacuum without the beater bar (suction only) and mop with a damp mop.  Use cleaners that are specific to your material.  Do not use a cleaner that has wax in it.  Protect your floor from scratches with felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  Rolling chairs void warranties.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your floor - we will send these with your final invoice.   DO NOT steam clean click marmoleum.

Carpet flooring

Carpet

Vacuum frequently - depending on the thickness of your carpet, you may need to use suction only (Wool carpet - use suction only to avoid pilling).  Have your carpets professionally steam cleaned every 18 months or so.  Rolling chairs will void warranties.  Clean spills as quickly as possible.  Have a carpet stain remover on hand to help with spot cleaning.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your carpet - we will send these with your final invoice.  

Tile flooring

Tile

Vacuum and then clean with a damp mop.  Protect from scratches by using felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  Steam cleaners can be used on tile.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your carpet - we will send these with your final invoice.

Cork flooring

Cork

Vacuum without a beater bar (suction only).  Mop with a damp mop.  Use either a hardwood or laminate specific cleaner (Bona or Shaw Floor cleaner).  Do not use any cleaning product that has wax in it.  Protect from scratches by using felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  NEVER use a steam cleaner on your cork floor.  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your cork - we will send these to you with the final invoice. 

Bamboo flooring

Bamboo

Vacuum without the beater bar.  Mop with a damp mop.  Use either a hardwood or laminate specific cleaner (Bona or Shaw floor cleaner).  Do not use any cleaning product that has wax in it.  Protect from scratches by using felt pads and coasters under your furniture.  NEVER use a steam cleaner on your bamboo floor.  Maintain the correct humidity levels in your home (see the specific information for your material).  Please read the specific care and maintenance information for your bamboo - we will send these to you with the final invoice.
